What is Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services?
Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services is a turnkey, no-cost vehicle donation program provided exclusively to public television and readio organizations and staffed by public broadcasting professionals.
Do stations pay fees to join Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services?
No. There is no cost to the station or the donor, ever.
Is a contract required?
Because of state regulations, we ask for a one-year contract.
How does Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services get paid?
Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services receives a small fee to cover management and administration, including towing and auction costs, reports, website, staff and donor call center. We're the only vehicle donation service that publishes our fee structure online. In addition, if a vehicle sale does not cover the cost of disposition, we absorb the difference. The donor gets free towing for an old car, its parts are recycled, and the station gains a happy donor.
What percent of the donation does the station receive?
What's most important is how much the vehicle sells for and how much of this gross sale amount is left over for the station. Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services returns an average of 61% of gross revenue, year over year. This is the mission Car Talk set when it founded the vehicle donation program in 2004.
Is there any liabilitiy to the station?
No. Under the unique structure of Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services, donations pass through a central charity, for the benefit of the station the donor designates and according to federal regulations. Thus, the station is protected from liability and incurs no fundraising costs.
What central charity does Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services use?
Our central charity is Independent Charities of America (ICA), a 501(c)(3) registered in every state. It serves the largest federation of non-profits in the country and helps run the Combined Federal Campaign on behalf of the United States government.
Is a vehicle donation tax deductible?
Yes. The donation is a charitable contribution, tax deductible for donors who itemize returns. (See Tax Information.)
Do you accept all vehicles, anywhere?
We strive to accept all vehicles. We take cars, trucks, boats, planes, motorcycles, RVs, and heavy farm equipment, running or not, no smog certificate necessary. We pick up vehicles almost anywhere in the country, with very few exceptions, made possible by our extensive network of vehicle disposition services in all 50 states.
What if the donor has questions or needs help?
We have a fully staffed customer service call center. Donors may contact our vehicle disposition specialists at 866-789-8627. They're experts at answering questions and solving issues relating to all aspects of a vehicle donation. Whether it's a question about towing, title transfers, tax receipts, or anything else, our customer service agents will help your supporters with everything they need.
Is this a turnkey program?
Yes, it is totally turnkey. Stations simply add information and links to their website, promote the program to members, viewers or listeners, cash the resulting checks, and thank donors. Most stations give every car donor a free year of membership.
How quickly do you pick up vehicles?
Once a donation is submitted, we generally pick up cars within 2-3 days after receiving a donor's paperwork, including a signed title, if required by the donor's state. If a donor needs to arrange for immediate or unusual pick-up situations, they can call us and we are happy to arrange expedited service.
What happens to the vehicles that are donated?
We have long-standing partnerships with the best car handlers in the industry - including the go-to re-seller for insurance companies and the industry's largest network of auction yards and direct buyers. Each vehicle is assessed for the market that will yield the best sale price, joining some 43 million other cars re-sold each year. We match each vehicle to the appropriate buyer. For example, recently we brought a donor's 1972 Porsche 911 to a premium car auction, where it netted five figures for a local public radio station. Meanwhile, a donor's 1987 GMC Jimmy turned into a welcome $110 for another station.
When do stations receive donation funds?
Stations receive checks monthly.
Who operates Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services?
Vehicle Donation to Any Charity, LLC (V-Dac), operates Car Talk Vehicle Donation Services. It is a registered fund-raising counsel with the State of California Office of the Attorney General. The company is known for delivering the highest net revenue to recipient non-profits compared to other independent national vehicle donation programs.
